We just had our house painted. Everything looks so fresh nice now. There is nothing like a fresh coat of paint to spruce the place up. I am working on the garden every chance I get now, which I love to do. I have so many perennials planted that just come up year after year and then I add some annuals here and there each new season. I also plant tomatoes and peppers and basil so I can make my marinated tomato salad which is a family favorite. I love the lush over grown look in a garden, not all finely manicured with plants lined up in rows like at a garden center, but more random covering up all the soil, growing freely, spreading out.
We have a pretty brick patio on one side of the yard and this is a little table and chairs we have out there for lunch or just to sit and enjoy the garden. Living near the ocean you will often see sea shells, beach rocks, lobster buoys, drift wood, etc, what ever I happen to come across on my beach walks usually ends up in the garden.
No garden is complete with a garden shed to hold your tools and supplies. Of course I like to decorate mine and it has morning glories crawling up the front of it along with a window box with potato vines, nasturtiums, and more morning glories. You will notice the lobster pot along the side of the shed which holds some plants, shells, a lighthouse birdhouse we got in Nova Scotia and of course, lots of sea glass. On the door is a favorite saying of mine, "We are happy as clams!"
Our beautiful farmer's porch has an umbrella table and chairs and is right off the back of our house. We eat dinner out there every night in the summertime, enjoying the garden and all the beautiful window boxes that I planted.
I love the window boxes just chock full of plants, some that grow up and some that hang down. I used the colors of green, light and dark lavender, yellow with a touch of pink. And always lots of white bacopa vine which is a fav of mine because as the summer goes along the plant makes a hanging blanket of little white flowers so I use it in almost all my plantings.
Anything with a container around my house gets planted. This hanging basket is against the back of the house and I just love the colors. The antique wooden box gets planted as well and it looks lush and pretty against the golden color of the house.
On the porch against the back of the house we have an old wooden bench that we bought down in Maine many years ago. I have my display of shells and bird's nests there along with crab and mussel shells, sea glass etc again things I collect on my beach walks that I simply cannot part with. I love to find crab shells that are various sizes and I display them in graduated sizes from the largest one down to the smallest one, adding new ones in each year. The texture and color of the shells are quite interesting to me and I love the shapes of the shells. Each year I add to my nest collection as well and friends and family who know that I love nests give them to me from time to time as they come across them. I got one last year from my daughter in PA that came with one perfect robin's egg in the bottom of the nest...truly a treasure from nature.
